Let me tell ya—I was born in the right generation. I love growing my own food, stocking a pantry full of home-canned goods, and baking sourdough. But at the same time, I also appreciate the convenience of Amazon overnight delivery. Oh, and let’s be honest—I’m not giving up my dishwasher anytime soon!
I’m grateful that I can embrace a homestead lifestyle while still enjoying modern conveniences. There’s something deeply satisfying about rendering your own tallow, tending to a garden, and preserving homegrown foods. These traditional skills connect us to the past and provide a sense of independence.
But let’s be real—there’s nothing wrong with also appreciating the ease of next-day delivery or running a load of laundry in the evening. Homesteading doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. You can enjoy the satisfaction of baking your own sourdough while still relying on store-bought essentials when needed. You can raise chickens but still pick up eggs when they’re not laying. (Although, I’ve always wanted to try water-glassing eggs… someday!)
So whether you’re deep into the self-sufficient lifestyle or just getting started, remember: it’s okay to embrace both the old and the new. After all, the best way to live is the way that brings you joy.
